BMW, the German car maker, rolled out its 20,000th car from the Chennai plant. The plant was set up in the year 2007 and spreads across 29,000 sq. metres. With a production capacity of 1,700 vehicles per annum, the plant was started to cater to the demands of the Indian car lovers. During the initial stage, only seats of BMW cars were manufactured in India, while other parts were imported. Last year, the company manufactured its 10,000th vehicle and after one year it has doubled the figure. In the Chennai plant of the company, BMW 3 Series and 5 Series sedans in petrol and diesel variants are manufactured.
The company targeted to set up its plant in Chennai due to the availability of large workforce of devoted professionals. Around 400 people work in the Chennai plant on a single shift basis to produce 5,400 units per year. Apart from this plant, the company has spare parts warehouse in Mumbai. For the BMW group, India is among the top 10 markets and has received higher sales revenue. Indian upper middle class and the elite segment is the main target of BMW in India. To provide customised solution to its clients in auto finance, the company launched the BMW Financial Service.
In the coming year, BMW plans to roll out more luxury cars for the Indian market. Further, the company is looking forward to spread its dealership network to provide maximum flexibility to Indian buyers.
