BMW India has surprised the auto world by posting a 14 percent growth in first seven months of 2009. During January-July sales period, BMW sold 2,008 units as against 1,763 units sold in the same period last year. These figures make BMW as the top luxury car brand in India with Mercedes holding the second position now. BMW also expects to easily touch 3000 units’ sales figure for this calendar year. BMW currently has its manufacturing plant in Chennai with an annual capacity of producing 3000 units annually.

"Mercedes Benz's lackadaisical performance in the first half of this year is primarily due to the impending all-new E-Class sedan launch in India as many potential buyers would rather wait for the new version than buy the existing models. Moreover, BMW's product launches have been greater than Mercedes and it is pulling out all stops to ramp up its distribution base across the length and breadth of the country," says an industry expert.

During the April-July period BMW clocked sales of 1016 units as compared to 853 units sold by its arch-rival Mercedes. BMW still has two model product launches before the year end which will boost sales figures in India.
