BMW ceases production of the Z4

More than 1.15 lakh units of the Z4 were assembled at Germany’s Regensburg plant till date and the last car that rolled off the production floor was an sDrive35iS variant. It sported an inline-six turbo N54 3.0-litre engine and came with an attractive orange paint. Reports claim that the demand for hardtops have fizzled out over the last few years. However, BMW is going to fill the void with a new soft top model that will be lighter, and is expected to be called the Z5 (codenamed G29).

Slated to be unveiled in the last quarter of 2017, the new model is also predicted to be offered with a hybrid motor with assistance from Toyota Motor. Sources added that as BMW and Toyota will be involved in building this new model, it could roll off the Magna Steyr’s factory in Graz, Austria in 2018. This factory produces cars for other companies on a contractual basis.

It will be exciting to know how these carmakers shape this new model. More on this in the months to come.
