German carmaker BMW alongside other big brands like Mercedes Benz and Audi has been a favorite pick in the domestic market. Speaking volumes in terms of BMW's popularity, the carmaker has reportedly crossed manufacturing the 40,000 production units mark at its Chennai facility.
The 40,000th car that has been rolled out from BMW's Chennai facility was a sparkling white colored 5 Series. The vehicle was rolled out in the presence of Robert Frittrang, Managing Director, Chennai BMW Plant and Philipp von Sahr, President, BMW Group India. The BMW Chennai plant that started operations back in 2007 is located in Mahindra World City. The fully operational plant is used for manufacturing 1 Series, 3 Series, 3 Series GT, 5 Series, 7 Series, X1, X3 and X5. The plant is also used for the production of Mini Countryman. Reportedly, the group has invested more than 51.8 Million Euros (approx INR 400 Crores).
Locally producing cars come with a set of benefits, as the overall cost comes way lower than what it would cost for an internationally manufactured trim. In the coming days BMW has been planning launching the new Mini, M3 and M4 for the domestic market.
