Battery cells for electric vehicles (EV) will be produced at the Suzuki Gujarat facility. As stated to the media, the local facility will be needed if it wants 40 per cent of new car sales to be EVs. Moreover, the manufacturing of battery cells at the Suzuki Gujarat facility will be important to keep the make in India going. The company will depend on countries like Latin America which is rich in raw material resources needed to make the cells.
Maruti stated that affordability of cars and EV infrastructure will be a priority. While emphasising on affordability, the company highlights that unlike internal combustion engine cars, small EVs aren't that cheap to make when compared to the large ones. Currently, the plans are in the initial stage of development and more details regarding the same will be known in the days to come.
