      Bangalore to get high capacity Volvo 7400XL, trials start

      Bangalore is all set to get the high capacity Volvo 7400XL as the trials for the spacious low floor city bus commenced in the metropolis. R. Ashoka, Home and Transport Minister, Government of Karnataka, flagged off the bus from BMTC central office, Shanthi Nagar TTMC. Several senior officials of the company, state government representatives and executives of the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation were present at the event. The officials of company present were Akash Passey, Senior Vice President-Business Region International, Volvo Bus Corporation and Chairman of the Board, Volvo Buses in India and Manish Sahi, Managing Director, Volvo Buses India.

      The Volvo 7400XL is special because of several unique features it incorporates. This vehicle is the country’s first multi-axle city bus having a steered axle. The steered tag –axle offers free movement to the bus even on tight roads and around narrow city turns. Having a length of 14.5m, the new city vehicle is all set to make public transport friendlier and even more efficient since it supports decent mass bus-based transport systems. With these vehicles, the commuters can enjoy a comfortable journey in fairly lesser time. Volvo 7400XL will provide mass transport with fewer buses and optimum resource utilisation leading the Volvo city bus concept to new heights.

      Talking about the trial runs, Akash Passey, Senior Vice President, Business Region International, Volvo Bus Corporation and Chairman of the Board, Volvo Buses in India quoted, “Volvo Buses has been at the forefront of driving innovation in mass transport solution and we are committed to driving the quality of life for millions of passengers in India. The response to the Volvo 8400 city bus in 13 cities across India has been very encouraging and the Volvo 7400XL will take the Volvo City Bus concept one step further.”

      Volvo 7400XL will further improve on the performance of Volvo 8400 in attracting people away from their personal vehicles, thus saving more fuel as well as road space and lowering carbon emissions. 7400XL, which can carry 100 passengers at a time, has higher sitting as well as standing capacity and, thus, will be a boon for growing cities with an appealing new body design.

      The Volvo Buses has brought this new service after studying and understanding the layout of high performing bus applications in India for 10 years. The Volvo 7400XL is developed by the group efforts of domestic and international designing engineers as well. Introduction of such highly efficient vehicles is the sign of Volvo Buses’ capability in manufacturing efficient vehicles to match the Indian demands.

      Special emphasis on the safety of passengers and drivers has been laid while designing Volvo 7400XL. The bus body has a tubular structure, which is built to maintain the anti-roll over standards. This vehicle features some of the advanced features like roll stabilisers, Electronic Braking Systems (EBS), latest PX suspension system and disc brakes which take the safety of this bus to a new level. There is low entry at the front and the middle which makes getting on and off the bus easy for passengers, even for those who have impaired mobility.

      The Volvo 7400XL is assimilated with a performance-oriented Volvo 7-litre diesel engine which incorporates turbocharger and intercooler. Efficient engine of this bus has the potential to churn out a maximum power of 290 bhp with a decent torque. Owing to these facts, this powertrain delivers an excellent drivability and brilliant fuel efficiency, which lowers the running cost of the vehicle and also decreased the deleterious impact on the environment.

      Presently, the buses of Volvo ply over the roads of 13 Indian cities, including Bangalore, Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Kolkata, Pune, Mysore, Mangalore, Faridabad, Chennai, Vellupuram, Thiruvanathapuram, Kochi, and Hyderabad.
