We were at the unveiling of the much anticipated SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) by Ford Motors, the EcoSport, on the eve of the Auto Expo 2012. It is an exciting new global vehicle from the stable of Ford Motors and with this the company aims to capture a larger share of the automobile market. The Ford EcoSport is most likely to hit the Indian roads in the next few months.
The Ford EcoSport is targeted at the young generation of the country with its trendy and sporty looks. Ford makes use of the ‘Kinetic design theme’ that is visible in the car lines and the grille in between the LED headlamps.
In order to deliver optimum performance, the Ford EcoSport is incorporated with Ford’s tiny EcoBoost engine that has been introduced in India for the first time. It is assimilated with 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine. It produces a maximum power of 118 hp and a peak torque of 170 Nm. This 1.0-litre engine performs as efficiently as a 1.6-litre engine with lower CO2 emissions and better mileage. The engine is assimilated with qualities like a better twin variable camshaft design, direct injection with turbocharging technology and intelligent ancillaries. Ford also plans to launch Ford EcoSport as a diesel variant with a 1.5-litre engine.
The Ford EcoSport is based on the same platform as that of the international Ford Fiesta. It is the second of the eight product range that Ford plans to bring out in India. The first model to be launched from the range was the Ford Fiesta.
The Ford EcoSport has a muscular design with narrow and angular LED headlamps. It has a prominent bonnet and connecting lines in the middle of the two headlamps. Highlighting exterior features include roof rails, roof antenna and silver skid plate. The Ford logo on the single slat chrome grille looks appealing. It has spacious interiors and can easily accommodate 5 passengers. It provides enough legroom and headspace to ensure that passengers are seated comfortably during the journey.
It is most likely that the company will price the Ford EcoSport between Rs. 8 lacs and Rs. 12 lacs in the Indian automobile market. The company will manufacture the EcoSport in India and Brazil, which will be sold in about 100 markets worldwide.
