The Germany based leading luxury car maker Audi has snatched the second largest luxury car maker’s spot from its arch rival Mercedes Benz in India. Mercedes Benz India that had lost the top spot in the Indian market to BMW in year 2009, and now yet another German luxury car maker Audi has surpassed Mercedes Benz in India.

As per a recent sales report published in the TOI, Audi India managed to sell 2,269 units of its cars in the Indian market during the first quarter of year 2012 as compared to 2,130 units sold by Mercedes Benz in the same period. However, BMW India maintained its top position by registering the sales of 2,369 units in the same period.

Interestingly, Mercedes was the first luxury car maker to debut in the Indian auto market among these German car makers. While BMW and Audi debuted in India in year 2007, Mercedes Benz has been operating in the country for more than 15 years.

Considering these sales figures, Audi India seems right on track with its aim of becoming the largest luxury car maker in India by year 2014.
