In an unfortunate chain of events, a super sports car Audi R8 caught fire and was rendered to ashes at this year's edition of the Parx Supercar Rally held in Mumbai on January 27, 2013. The mishap took place on Bandra Worli Sea Link and luckily the driver escaped unhurt and no casualty or injury has been reported.
Further, the identity of the 'burnt' Audi R8 owner is yet to be released to the media, but sources have confirmed that the driver was not a member of Supercar Club of India. The stunning super sports car got burnt till ashes and the sight was quite appalling. The Audi R8 super sports car is offered to domestic audience with a base price tag of Rs. 1.34 crore that goes on till Rs. 1.7 crore in the Indian auto market.
The Parx Supercar Rally event also witnessed the participation of Indian racing exponent Karun Chandhok, Gautam Singhania, the Founder and Chairman of Supercar club of India, along with Michael Perschke, Head, Indian arm of Audi, amongst others. Perschke has acknowledged that the cause of fire is yet to be found, but questions have been raised that the owner had modified its Audi R8 supercar. Further, the Audi India Head has asked automobile media to stay patient till the exact facts and reasons come up, which led to the unfortunate incident.
Expressing his views about the mishap, Gautam Singhania, tweeted, “Today had a unique opportunity to save an unknown hapless driver out of an Audi R8 which caught fire on Sea Link, along with my SCC members.” In his addressing speech to media, Singhania confirmed that the driver of Audi R8 was not a member of Supercar Club of India.
