Audi introduces the first diesel-powered S series model, SQ5, at 24 hours of Le Mans

Audi, the completely owned subsidiary of Volkswagen, introduced its 2013 Audi SQ5 TDI at the world’s oldest active car race, 24 Hours of Le Mans. With car, the company has not just presented the first crossover with the S moniker, but also the first model in its class to be fitted with a diesel powertrain.

The German luxury car manufacturer plans to kick-off the production of SQ5 TDI and start its deliveries in Europe early next year. SQ5 TDI is assimilated with a 3.0 litre twin-turbo diesel V-6 powertrain which has the potential to churn out maximum power of 313 bhp and massive torque of 650 Nm at a fairly low 1450 rpm. The engine of this car is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission system which transmits the power produced to all the wheels of car through Quattro All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) system.

With excellent output, the car will swiftly move from 0 to 100 kmph within a short span of 5.1 seconds. The top speed of 2013 Audi SQ5 TDI is electronically limited to 248 kmph. With such brilliant output and performance, the car also delivers a decent mileage of 11.68 kmpl on the European cycle and has weight bearing capacity of 2405 kg.

While designing the SQ5, the company reduced the height of its Q5 model by 1.18 inch and incorporated electromechanical power steering, whose features can be modified via the Audi drive select system. Providing a sporty factor to the car, Audi fitted a set of 20 inch alloy wheels of 255/45 rubber size tyres. Besides this set of standard wheels, the company also offers 21 inch wheels as optional accessory.

Distinguishing SQ5 TDI from Q5, the car holds a grey polished platinum single frame grille which is embossed with the S badge. The moderate updates provided on the exteriors of SQ5 include revamped bumpers, aluminium-capped mirrors, larger roof spoiler, SQ5 TDI hatch badges, new rear diffuser and quad exhaust. The company has offered just two colours in its SQ5, namely Estoril Blue and Panther Black.

Bringing the interiors of SQ5 in the limelight, the company has given the complete S treatment to the crossover with black trim and sports seats. Both of these advancements are surrounded in either Alcantara and Pearl Nappa leather or full leather, which is available as optional accessory. In order to highlight the black cabin of the car, aluminium polished inlays are offered as standard trimmings. However, they can be exchange with piano black, Carbon Atlas or new aluminium and Beaufort wood trims.

Focussing upon the customers who demand bright interiors, the car is also provided with a light silver headlining. The pedals finished in fine aluminium look and grey-backed gauges signify that the model has been subjected to the S treatment. The characteristic S badge is mounted over the black brake callipers, unique steering wheel, door sills, shift knob, start button and infotainment system welcome screen of the car. The crossover will be put to sale with a price tag of €58,500 ($73,903). However, the company has not expressed any plans yet to route the car to the Indian auto market.
