Reports suggest that Audi expects its next-gen A1 to offer stiff competition to the latest Mini.

Audi expects the next A1 to give Mini a tough time

Let’s look at what’s new in the upcoming car. The MQB AO architecture used to design the next A1, and also seen in the A3, will help lower production costs. Plus, the aluminium intensive platform will help the application lose unnecessary weight. Expect the new A1 to also grow in size since the new platform supports a wheelbase that’s 94mm longer than the current car. The biggest change, however, is that the new A1 will no longer be available in the three-door body-style.

Audi is expected to heavily revise the new A1’s suspension system and it will also get adaptive damping control as an option. The new A1 will be equipped with Quattro over a range of engines too. Talking about engines, the base version will get a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol motor with 113bhp and there will also be a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol that makes 148bhp. The range-topper S1 variant will be powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol motor with 250bhp on tap, and should join the line-up at a later time.

Expect the second-generation Audi A1 to hit the international arena in the first half of 2018.
