Formerly, AMG used to function independently as an engineering firm that manufactured performance oriented powertrains. At that time, the company mainly resorted to enhancing the engine of Mercedes-Benz vehicles until in 1990, when Daimler Chrysler took over the controlling interest. After that in 2005, AMG became a wholly owned subsidiary of Daimler.

At present, the cars that bear the AMG tag are the most expensive ones manufactured by Mercedes-Benz. The appearance of AMG designed cars have significant characteristics that is coupled with top class engine performance. While designing AMG models, Mercedes-Benz extensively uses the carbon fibre material so as to reduce the kerb weight of the car besides the carbon ceramic brakes.

Unlike the other car specialised car modifiers that mainly deal in tweaking Mercedes-Benz vehicles, AMG models are sold in tandem with regular cars by the company itself. Some of the renowned cars that are powered by AMG designed engines are SLK 55 AMG, CLK 63, SL 65 AMG, C63 AMG and SLS AMG.

manufacturing of high-end cars, the company created BMW M or M-Technik, which was aimed at supplementing the portfolio of the company with modified and higher trim models.

The cars that are powered by the M technology have specifically tweaked gearbox, suspensions, interiors and exteriors so as to offer a distinct feel to the customers as compared to conventional models. Alterations made to the exteriors makes the cars of M series stand out amongst the regular production models of BMW. As of now, all the regular production models of BMW are available in M trim level except the X1, X3 and 7 Series models.
