Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ CEO, Sergio Marchionne has revealed that the new Alfa Romeo SUV, due to hit the US markets by 2017, will be called ‘Stelvio’. Also, the production of the Giulia sedan that was being shelved for quite some time will also begin by the end of March.
The Alfa Romeo Stelvio and the Giulia are part of the Italian marque’s long term revival plan of achieving annual sales of 4 lakh units by 2018. Alfa Romeo stunned a lot of people with the striking new Giulia, especially with the 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 belting out 503bhp of power. Touted as the BMW M3 rival, it attempts to match the performance while taking the crown for the looks.
The Stelvio is based on the Giulia platform and will use the same front-engine rear-wheel-drive setup. While the Giulia will be available only with manual transmission, we can expect the Stelvio to get an automatic option. Both the cars will be available with a four-wheel-drive option.
The Stelvio is expected to go into production by 2017 while the Giulia will hit global markets by the mid-year. We, here in India, would certainly want Alfa Romeo to consider the lucrative nature of our markets and bring those beauties to the Indian shore.
