Tata Motors which is usually tight lipped about everything including its present and upcoming plans has recently hinted that the company is planning a new small car in its product portfolio that will be placed between Nano and Tata Indica. The company admitted that they do not have anything in the middle at the moment and this is a big market that is being missed out. Tata Nano is priced below Rs. 2 lakh while Indica variants are priced above Rs. 3 lakhs.

“There is some white space between the Nano and Indica and we could be looking at it,” said Mr Carl Peter Forster, MD and CEO, adding that India is emerging as the “worldwide capital of small cars”. He said there was no joint product development plan on the anvil with Jaguar Land Rover.

Sources say that this new car model would be developed completely in-house by the company and it could arrive in the market by 2012. Currently the segment is largely dominated by Maruti followed by Hyundai.
