The Toyota Supra has been an icon, a legend, a cult – evoking emotions that only a few cars have managed to bring out in the century-old history of automobiles. So after the Supra disappeared in the late-90s, we have been hoping for a new one year after year, for almost two decades now.

Toyota has finally revealed an entirely new concept, under the Gazoo Racing ‘GR’ brand, and it is called the Concept Supra. While the original supra was rather understated, the Concept Supra goes all out rallying on the recent edgy design trends from the Japanese car makers.

The front bumper is practically a wing, befitting a track-only car replete with a lip-spoiler, wings et al. The hood gets breathing gill-scoops and the racing lineage with the single central wiper is evident. The two-door coupe gets a massive rear wing, rear splitter and a wide-body stance to reiterate its race-car avatar.

Toyota has revealed absolutely nothing about the technical specification or the powertrain, but the word that this has been co-developed with the new BMW Z4 means that this will be immensely capable around any circuit. It is said to be powered by a 3.0-litre straight-six just like the original Supra, pumping more than 300bhp of power. The production model based on the GR Supra might be in the offing, especially because we have seen the car prototype being tested in roads.

As to when you can expect a production Supra is a question we do not really have an answer to. But rest assured, Toyota should bring the icon back in the next couple of years at least.
