Jeep is planning to launch the Compass SUV in India next year with high localisation levels. The carmaker had recently started testing the SUV in India and the test mules were recently spied on the streets of Mumbai.
Though spotted in a disguised avatar, the swirly camo pattern can't do much to hide the Jeep-ness of the Compass. The most evident Jeep’s signature seven-slot grille and trapezoidal wheel arches could be easily identified under the camouflage. The SUV was anyway completely revealed at the Los Angeles Motor Show showing off the styling, which is reminiscent of the larger Grand Cherokee. Jeep Compass is based on a modified version of the company’s Small-Wide 4×4 platform, also used on the Renegade and Fiat's 500X. The Compass’ cabin boasts of good interior space and features modern day tech including a host of safety features.
Globally, this second-gen Compass gets five engine options including three petrol variants and two oil-burners. We can expect one petrol and diesel unit to be offered for the Indian market. The carmaker might also offer the vehicle in two- and four-wheel drive variants like in the international market. On the transmission front, both manual and automatic gearboxes will be on offer.
The Compass will be the first locally-made Jeep model in India with it being produced at the Tata-FCA JV’s Ranjangaon plant in Maharashtra. Also, this India-made model will likely be exported to right-hand drive markets like Australia, New Zealand, UK, etc. as well. Price although not confirmed, with good localisation levels should help Jeep to price it at around Rs 20 lakh, which might be competitive given its size. The Compass should then compete against some of the country's best-selling compact SUVs.
