The Ford EcoSport has been launched in India at Rs 7.31 lakhs (All-India ex-showroom). There are five petrol and diesel variants, seven colours and a fully updated feature list to bring it on par with the competition. Also included is a new face and three-cylinder petrol engine. Launched in 2013, this is a major update for the car and it has come a long way since 2013 and here then are the highs and lows of buying the 2017 EcoSport.

      The good

You get big muscle in a small package and this means that attention is guaranteed for the EcoSport. But at the same time, the hatchback-like dimensions means it is easy to park and manoeuvre. What’s more, it now gets the segment standard features and can stand up to the rivals when compared to the outgoing model. The SUV design also ensures that it will be on the radar of those who want a compact car, but for the road less travelled.

Finally, it is the only compact SUV in the segment to be offered with a petrol automatic option. This opens up the EcoSport to a set of buyers that would have previously shied away from looking at the compact SUV segment due to the lack of diversity both in terms of petrol engines as well as two-pedal setups.

      The bad

The dimensions haven’t changed as compared to the outgoing model and this means it is still a bit of a squeeze to fit three abreast in the rear section. The quality of some of the plastics while being long lasting, feels low grade. This would have been fine a few years ago but now the competition has moved ahead and the EcoSport seems visibly behindhand. Our expert reviewers also felt the need for more mid-range from the petrol motor in the D-mode.

      Best variant

We would recommend the Titanium variant in the both the petrol and diesel options as they get most of the features in terms of infotainment as well safety.
