BMW is working on the new generation for the X3 SUV and it is slated to be revealed in 2017. Ahead of its launch, two test mules were spotted testing in Germany recently; one a standard version and the other with the M package.

Interestingly, the overall appearance of both the cars suggests that the new X3 has grown in size. This will be the third generation of this SUV and probably the largest. Despite the heavy camouflage, it’s not difficult to separate the standard model from the M Performance one. The latter sports muscular bumpers, roof rails, a spoiler and dual exhausts. The alloy wheel pattern is different on both the variants and the cars seem to sport tyres of different sizes as well.

BMW might also update the engine options with a range of four-cylinder and six-cylinder units. This includes the direct-injection petrol as well as the common-rail diesel power plants. The four-cylinder units will come mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, while the other units will come paired to a new ZF-sourced nine-speed automatic transmission.

For the M Performance variant, BMW might equip the X3 with the same turbocharged 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder mill from the M3. With a power output rated at around 425bhp, this high-performance variant should be able to compete with the Porsche Macan Turbo and the upcoming Mercedes-AMG GLC63.
