BMW has launched the seventh generation 5 Series in India at Rs 49.90 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi). Internally called G30, the new 5 Series is being offered with two diesel and one petrol engine options and in four variants - 530i Sport Line, 520d Sport Line, 520d Luxury Line and 530d M Sport.

BMW has opted for the modular OKL platform to underpin the new 5 Series. Also used in the new 7 Series, the OKL platform makes use of carbon fibre, aluminium, magnesium and high-strength steel to keep the saloon light. The styling has also been derived from the 7 Series, with the kidney grille, elongated headlamps and the stretched profile giving it an elegant look. The black and beige cabin along with aluminium inserts give the 5 Series a premium feel. The longer wheelbase has improved the cabin space. The new iDrive system now supports gesture control.

As for the powertrain, the new 5 Series is available with two four-cylinder and one six-cylinder engine options. The base 530i gets a 2.0-litre petrol engine, delivering 248bhp and 350Nm of torque. The 520d gets a 2.0-litre four-cylinder delivering 190bhp and 400Nm of torque. The top-spec 530d on the other hand, gets a 3.0-litre straight six churning out 261bhp and 620Nm of torque. All three variants are offered with a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission.

The new BMW 5 Series shares the market space with other luxury sedans like the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Audi A6, Jaguar XF, Lexus ES and the Volvo S90.
