General Motors first introduced its Chevrolet Beat model first at the New York Auto Show in 2007. It appeared as a part of trio concept cars along with micro-crossover model Chevrolet Trax and Chevrolet Groove which is a retro minivan. General Motors Korean offshoot GM DAT decided to put Beat into production after the model was chosen as the most favoured one by nearly 1.9 million online voters.

The latest model of Chevrolet Beat turns out to be a 4-door hatchback model that arrives in US in 2011. The latest model is lighter, smaller and cheaper and comes as the smallest Chevrolet ever being sold in the American market. The length of the European model is nearly 143 inches which is good enough to fit four 6-feet people and the US model is expected to be at least 12 feet long. The car does not compete with entry level cars in the US market like Ford Fiesta (154 inches) or Honda Fit. It features 15 inch wheels that are larger than any of its competitors. The instrument cluster mounted near the steering wheel is more “motorcycle-like” which means that GM does not have to work too hard to produce left-hand or right hand versions.

The European model and Asian model of 2012 Chevrolet Beat will be powered by 1.0L and 1.2L four-cylinder engines while the US market will have 1.2L engine only. General Motors will introduce the Indian model of Chevrolet Beat on 4th January at the forthcoming Delhi Auto Expo 2010. Powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine, the Beat is expected to be priced in the Rs 4-5 lakh bracket.
