      About Jaguar XF

      Summary

The first generation XF launched in 2007 was a big step forward for Jaguar. Combining a sleek, coupe-like exterior and a luxurious interior with features such as the rotary shift controller, rotating air vents and blue ambient lighting, the XF turned out to be a highly desirable car. The new XF, second update of the same generation, retains its predecessor’s core attributes while using Jaguar’s aluminium-intensive architecture to enable weight savings of up to 190kg.

The new Jaguar XF will go up against its German rivals like the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes E-Class, the Audi A6 and the upcoming Volvo S90.

Further to this, read Jaguar XF Road Test details by our expert.

      Exterior

On the outside, the near vertical fascia, shorter front overhang, longer wheelbase and the aggressive looking front and rear taillights reflect Jaguar’s new approach towards designing their cars. For the first time in any Jaguar, the headlights feature adaptive full-LED technology. They also feature the brand’s signature J-Blade LED daytime running lights, as seen in the outgoing model. As for the size, the new XF is 4,954mm long and at 2,960mm, the wheelbase is 51mm longer than before. Though 7mm shorter and 3mm lower than the original XF, Jaguar says its new model is more spacious than the previous.

      Interior

Like the original XF, the highlight of the interior remains the start-up sequence bringing the car to life as the rotary gear selector rises up from the centre console and the air vents rotate into position. The cabin also features a 12.3-inch full-TFT instrument cluster and a 10.2-inch touchscreen, four-zone climate control, 10-colour ambient lighting and much more to add to the luxurious appeal.

The longer wheelbase in the new XF means that occupants in the second row sit further away from the rear wheels. This has allowed Jaguar to reduce seat height slightly, contributing to the increased headroom, which is now up to 27mm more than before. The rear bench also features a more practical 40:20:40 split while the boot lid now benefits from an optional power close function.

As for the safety, you have six airbags standard across the variants with a comprehensive stability program that includes ABS, EBD, traction control, skid control along with hill-hold function and other driving aids.

      Engine and Gearbox

The 2016 Jaguar XF is one of the first leaping cats in the country to get the new series of the 2.0-litre Ingenium engines. The 1999cc turbocharged four cylinder diesel engine develops 177bhp of power and 430Nm of torque while the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol develops 237bhp of power and 340Nm of torque. Both the engines are mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox that sends power to the rear wheels.

Globally the new XF range consists of XF Prestige, XF R-Sport, XF Portfolio and XF S models. These models are offered in a variety of drivetrain options including 160bhp and 180bhp, a 2-litre Ingenium diesel manual and an automatic, 300bhp, 3-litre V6 diesel automatic and a 380bhp 3-litre V6 petrol automatic.

      Mileage

The 1999 cc Diesel - powered variant delivers a fuel economy of 11 kmpl in city and 13 kmpl on highways, while the Petrol variant offers a mileage of 8 kmpl on urban roads and 10 kmpl and freeways, respectively.

      XF Expert Review

      Opening

Jaguar has turned up the heat in the mid-size luxury segment in India by introducing the latest iteration of its XF sedan. It’s sharper and meaner looking, has new interiors and gets a brand new high-tech diesel engine. But wait there is more as it has gone through a weight-loss program, which will surely improves dynamics as well as efficiency. It all sounds good, but has the carmaker done enough to prep up this four-door sedan to go up against its established rivals? To find out, we drove the petrol variant in the top-of-the-line Portfolio variant and the diesel in the entry-level Pure trim.

      Jaguar XF

      Appearance Exterior

Although Jaguar might have used an evolutionary approach in terms of design, under the skin the second generation XF is brand new. It uses a similar platform which also underpins the smaller XE and the recently launched F-Pace. Despite being around the same size as the outgoing model the new XF is nearly 190kg lighter thanks to extensive use of aluminium in its construction.

      Jaguar XF

And even if it retains the predecessor’s overall shape, thankfully there are numerous touches to set both apart. The Portfolio version (red) boasts of new adaptive LED headlamps, while the Pure trim (white) has to settle with a projectors. The ‘J’ blade LED DRLs look fantastic and the sharper front bumper gets chrome slats underneath. On to the sides, you'll notice the 17-inch alloys for the Pure trim. However, it's the 18-inchers on the Porfolio that look more appealing. At the rear, it looks too similar to the XE with updated tail lamps.

      Jaguar XF

      Appearance Interior

As soon as you press the push-start button on the centre console, you are welcomed by some familiar theatricality. The gear lever rises from the console and side air-con vents rotate open. Thanks to the electrically adjustable front seats it's easy to get into a comfy driving position. In fact, with the Portfolio trim you get 14-way adjustable seat, which includes squab and side bolstering to further aid comfort. It also benefits from brown tan leather as against the black upholstery in the Pure trim. The latter isn't bad, but the former adds to a bit more lavish feel.

      Jaguar XF

Now with the new platform, the wheelbase has increased by 51mm, translating into an additional 15mm in legroom and 24mm in knee room according to Jaguar’s claimed figures. Also, headroom has increased by 27mm at the rear making the cabin feel spacious. The rear seat is wide and comfortable for three passengers. However, being a rear-wheel drive car, the protruding transmission tunnel makes this a strict four-seater only. Although comfortable on its own, the back seat experience still can’t match the likes of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class or even the BMW 5-Series.

      Jaguar XF

The overall feel and quality of materials in the interior feels rich, which makes the new car’s cabin feel a lot more upmarket than its predecessor. The fit and finish has definitely gone up a notch, but still materials around the gear selector and some of the plastic knobs and switches could have been better made. We would have also preferred rotary knobs for the air-con controls instead of the small buttons you have to use to operate them.

      Jaguar XF

As far as equipment is concerned both the variants we had on test were fitted with six airbags as standard. The base Pure trim though misses out loads of luxury features which you come to expect of a car at this price. The Portfolio trim on the other hand is fully loaded. It boasts of a HUD (heads-up display), 12.3-inch fully TFT instrument cluster and ambient lighting to have an edge over the entry-level variant. Unlike the dated looking analog instrument cluster in the Pure, the one in the Portfolio shows maps and other important functions. Though helpful it isn’t as innovative or as intuitive as Audi’s virtual cockpit. The 10.2-inch touch screen on the Portfolio trim is a huge jump over the old pixelated unit which is still there on the Pure trim. The new one dubbed InControl Touch Pro infotainment system has good haptic feedback and is easy to use. Combined with clarity and responsiveness, this screen connects to the multiple cameras and supports navigation as well. Then the 825W Meridian system just sounds fantastic.

      Jaguar XF

      Performance Drive

Let's first talk about JLR's new Ingenium diesel engine first. This new 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel mill definitely feels more refined compared to the older 2.2-litre unit. That said, the new one is still clattery especially at low revs. But it does smoothen out on the go and the well-insulated cabin helps further reduce NVH. The power output rated at 177bhp and 430Nm of torque might not seem quite a lot, but it provides sufficient thrust to keep you entertained. This is evident post the 2,000rpm mark where there is a strong surge which helps the car make brisk progress. There are four driving modes - Normal, Eco, Rain and Dynamic, which alter the response for the throttle, gearbox and steering. Eco and Normal is best suited for city commutes as the gearbox upshifts early to help you make smooth progress. Shift to Dynamic however, and the XF shows off the traits of the strong engine to deliver a good dose of power whenever needed.

      Jaguar XF

But, if you are after performance and love driving, then the petrol XF is the one to go for. It feels more powerful because this 2.0-litre turbocharged power plant belts out 237bhp of power and 340Nm of torque. It is a punchy motor throughout the rev range and visits to the redline are greeted by a refined snarl from this turbocharged unit. Thanks to this, the XF petrol sprints to 100kmph from standstill in 8.38 seconds and eventually reaches its top speed of 248kmph with ease. The engine is refined and quiet unless you are revving it heavily; which most of the times you will. You will love to get the maximum out of every gear with the S mode allowing you to rev till 6,500rpm. That’s when the engine becomes audible, but still has a good note. The eight-speed transmission in both models works smoothly and gives a great sense of precision while changing gears. However, there is a slight delay in downshifting and we wished it was calibrated to deliver gearshifts with a little more immediacy. Nonetheless, paddle-shifters come to the rescue and in this mode the gearbox will downshift or upshift whenever you want it to.

      Jaguar XF

Thanks to the extensive use of aluminium in its construction, the XF is considerably lighter than its predecessor. The car’s straight-line stability is good, but it is in the bends where the XF shows off its expertise. It is keen in taking corners without much body roll and there is loads of grip from the sticky tyres to further give you confidence to push it. The brakes are progressive and have a good bite to quickly stop the car too. The ride at high speeds feels flat too which makes it a great long distance car. On the flipside, at low speeds the suspension feels a bit noisy especially while going over sharp edged obstacles. But this trait is true to most of the new cars which come shod with lighter aluminum components for their suspension. Clearing speed breakers also wasn't an issue. Plus the light and accurate steering makes driving within the city easy, while it weighs up nicely at high speeds.

      Conclusion

Jaguar has paid good attention to the engine, driving feel and overall dynamics in this iteration of the XF. This has enabled the second-gen XF deliver immense thrills and while still being comfortable. It puts a smile across your face and you would prefer driving this Jag against its rivals. But, if you were to look at the pricing you might stick to your needs and not wants. Even if the XF has improved in every area over its predecessor, the high asking price is bit of a downer. Priced in between Rs 49.5 lakh to Rs 62.1 lakh (ex-showroom New Delhi), thanks to it being a CBU, the XF is the most expensive in its class. This makes Jaguar’s job all the more difficult of making this sedan a success. So the new Jaguar XF is distinctive, great to drive and a comfortable luxury saloon, but is also a bit too pricey for its own good.

Jaguar XF 2.2... The New Cat on the prowl.

        08/29/2013 23:08:51 | Sharmila Kulkarni

        Whats Good

The new Jaguar is an absolute stunner!! Heads turn wherever you go. The experience starts with the much talked about handshake of the car. As soon as you enter the car , the throbbing start button urges you to press and wake the sleeping big cat. As soon as the growl is heard, the gear knob emerges from the depths along with the rotatory opening of the ac vents. The steering wheel tilts to your set position as if bowing to your every command. The new Daylight running lamp design is awesome. The shape unique. The external finish is exquisite. Tail lamps give this car the kind of look reserved for cars above 1 Cr. As far as the interiors are concerned, the car fit and finish is of a very high quality and the leather seats give a plush feel. Very elegant...not too flashy. At night the soft glowing interior ambience lighting makes you feel special. The cabin design gives a feel of being in an aeroplane cockpit and as one of my friends observed... it zooms like one too. Driving the jag is an experience by itself. The steering is not buttery soft as many of the other cars I tried and gives me a feel of the road while driving. The acceleration is smooth and the car is not shy of reaching the higher rpms. All in all the car has a SOLID feel about it and feels very safe on the road in spite of being such a beauty... a rare combination.

        What Can Improve

Given that Jaguars are from sports lineage, but the seats for the front passenger seem to be too low. This causes the thigh support to diminish and it may not be comfortable on a very loong drive. The door pockets are not large enough to hold even a small sized water bottle. And the cup holders are quite small as well. The controls are almost all on the touchscreen. Navigation can become dangerous to use, esp. if u have to make changes while driving. In other countries this feature has a voice control which is sorely lacking in the Indian version...don't know why. The map-my-India navigation is probably not up-to date and many of the important landmark buildings or Hotels are not mapped...for eg. I had to reach The Courtyard Marriott hotel and Hotel Rennaissance in Mumbai for a conference from Nashik where I live and it did not have that mapped. It did not have Temple Hill road which is a famous tourist destination in Nashik mapped. so the navigation needs an upgrade right at the basic level too. I think also that the turbo boost comes a bit slow and I have to wait for a bit after the pedal is pressed for the car to start accelerating. however once the turbo kicks in the g forces are hard to neglect or resist !

I have been driving the Jaguar XF since quite a time now and I am very much satisfied with everything that this car has offered me. The luxury quotient is there plus, the unmatched level of performance is simply superb. Talking about the technical side of this car first, the Jaguar XF has three engine options. Out of these, two are petrol engines and one is a diesel engine. Among the petrol ones, the variants are having 5.0 litre naturally aspirated V8 engine and 5.0 litre supercharged V8 engine options. The first petrol engine option enables the car to generate a maximum power output of 379 hp and a torque of 515 Nm. On the other hand, the second variant produces a maximum power of 503 hp and a torque of 625 Nm. The diesel variant also offers nearly similar results as it generates a maximum power of 271 hp and a torque of 600 Nm. Apart from the tremendous power, the Jaguar XF also delivers an amazing acceleration. While driving this car, it can reach speed of 100 kmph in near about 5 seconds. Besides performance, the comfort in this Jaguar sedan is very much appreciatory and it has a lot inside its roof. Prominent interior features like versatile steering wheel, wider range of seat designs with the personalisation advantage in it and effective climate control not only offer a stylish interior look but also provide comfort.

        01/12/2012 10:56:42 | Jigar

Among the luxury cars that I have, the Jaguar XK delights me the most. This super-fast creation of Jaguar is powered by a powerful 5.0 litre V8 petrol engine and this engine is available in both the petrol variants of Jaguar XK. The first variant which is the base model of Jaguar XK produces a maximum power output of 503 hp and a peak torque of 635 Nm. Owing to such an advanced engine configuration, the super-fast sedan can accelerate to a maximum speed of 100 kmph in just 4.8 seconds. On the other hand, the second variant which is named as Jaguar XK-S has a power generation capacity of 542 hp and a torque of 680 Nm. The acceleration in this variant is also superb as the car can cross the speed mark of 100 kmph in a mere 4.4 seconds. The company has also given its super-fast sedan a very attractive and an aerodynamic look. It has a convertible roof and apart from it, many attractive exterior features are packed in it. Among its top features are the intelligent headlamps, power fold mirrors, front & rear parking aids and rain-sensing windscreen wipers. I am also pleased with the innovation that has been done at the interior side of the car. It has an option of a wider choice of colours, materials and trims in the inside. Apart from it, the luxury sedan is having leather steering wheel with integrated controls, dual automatic zone climate control and superior seating options.
