      Introduction:-

Tata Motors has been working hard to get their priorities right. In fact, they’ve been at it for a few years now, and their first product to see the light of all the positive transition, is the Tiago. Recently, Tata Motors revealed that they’re eager to also rope in women buyers to boost their sales figures. Now, as we’ve already written about the Tiago and Celerioin their petrol disguise, it is the turn of their diesel variants to get compared.

In Tata’s bid to deck out the Tiago’s package, the team entailed it with cut throat prices that range from Rs 3.34 lakh to Rs 5.72 lakh. Compare this with the Rs 4.94 lakh to Rs 6.03 lakh that you need to part with for the Maruti Celerio diesel. In this episode we pry into lives of the Tiago Revotorq XZ and the Celerio DDiS ZDi (opt) to give you an indication of what each is good at..

      Exterior:-

We’re sure that a glance is more than enough to appreciate the Tiago’s form. It’s a great combo of fresh design and appealing lines. While Tata has deviated from the regular design language for this hatch, they have lent an unmistakeable identity to the Tiago. On the whole, Tata has to be acknowledged for bringing quality into the package that makes it feel more premium than the segment contenders. That said, there is some resemblance to the Grand i10 when viewed from the rear-three-quarter angle.

A look at the Maruti Celerio somehow does not create any inspiration, as the artless design is quite uninteresting. Everything about the exterior detailing points to it being a tall hatchback that’s not as wide as its counterpart. Simple lines throughout the design are brought together to craft this functional looking car. We have to mention that the Celerio tends to look unusually bigger than it is, only due the higher stance. Would you be surprised to know that the Celerio’s wheelbase is 25mm more than the Tiago’s? Now, whichever way you look at it, the Tiago is the car that’s more pleasing to the eyes.

      Interior:-

This is where Tata has made the difference. Different grains and matching colours of plastic can be seen within the cabin. That fish skin texture on the dashboard creates a truly premium feel. All buttons and controls depict improved quality levels, and the basic design of the interiors and dash, is very pleasing to the eye. We did notice that the seats are a tad too soft to offer appropriate comfort on longer stints. That said, the overall cabin quality can be compared to cars from a segment above.

Even though quality levels within the Celerio are up to the segment standards, it does not really stand out. Then there are those less exciting curves. Despite a few shades of grey, beige and black being splashed into the cabin, it looks rather boring in comparison. However, the seats are firmer and are definitely more comfortable for longer drives. They’re also easier to get in and out of. Armed with the taller roofline and a larger glass area throughout, these help the little Celerio feel bigger than it actually is.

Tiago outshone the competitor by offering more legroom in the front, more thigh support in the rear, and superior shoulder room at both ends. Furthermore, Celerio’s packaging helps it edge out more rear legroom, and up to 5cm more headroom both in the front and in the rear. Additionally, while the Tiago’s boot can swallow 242 litres, the Celerio can accommodate 235 litres of luggage space. It needs to be mentioned here that the Celerio’s boot is more usable owing to the shape, and it can also be opened without a key. After spending quality time in both the cabins, it’s the Tiago’s that attracts with the premium and plush feel.

      Performance:-

Maruti’s Celerio comes with a 793cc two cylinder diesel engine that makes 47.5bhp at 3500rpm. Peak torque is measured at 125Nm at 2000rpm. Compare this to the Tata Tiago, which gets a 1047cc three cylinder diesel motor that makes a markedly more 69bhp at 4000rpm. A maximum of 140Nm of torque is delivered between 1800rpm and 3000rpm. Five speed gearboxes can be seen on either cars too. Now, while superior insulation suppresses the diesel clatter within the Tiago’s cabin, the Celerio’s is more pronounced and also filters uncomfortably into the cabin.

Tata’s Tiago also gets the added advantage of Eco and City modes. While city chores are mostly accommodated by the Eco mode, it’s advisable to use the City mode when you’re out on the highway to aid overtaking. 0-100kmph is despatched by the Tiago in 17.26sec while the Celerio got the same job done in a much slower 22.73sec. Nevertheless, with the Celerio’s 180kg weight advantage, the 20-80kmph sprint was despatched in 15.77sec while the Tiago managed 15.94sec. Surprisingly, with the Celerio slotted into appropriate gears and revs around 2000rpm, it felt peppier overall. But out on the highway, the Tiago pulls strongly from under 2000rpm all the way to 3000rpm, and it is this feature that aids its mid-range driveability.

With its extra 180kg weight and robust suspension setup, the Tiago tackles bad roads at speed like a much bigger car. There’s more grip, and it silently and confidently soaks up most of the undulations with only a certain amount of sharp bumps filtering through. Though the steering feels lighter and accurate enough, the only grouse is the vagueness around the dead centre when speeds rise. At slower speeds, the Celerio felt stiffer, but once the velocity picked up, the Celerio’s ride saw it go flatter over all surfaces. Also, the steering is decidedly heavier at lower speeds making city errands a bit more tasking to the arms. Overall, we feel that the Tiago is a better performer of the two.

      Conclusion:-

At one end we have the Celerio which has more cabin space, better visibility and is the easier car to get in and out of due to the tall design. There’s even more usable boot space. And at the other end is the Tiago, which gets a refined motor with better overall performance, more equipment, superior build quality, better ride and handling and a big car feel at a substantially lower sticker price of Rs 31,000 over than the Celerio. Now that you know what each of these contenders are good at, we’re sure that you will make a calculated decision based on what suits you best..
