      Cartrade Comparison Test

Based on the Nissan Sunny, Renault Scala is pitched against the entry level sedans being sold in the country. The factor where it scores more than the Nissan Sunny is its bold and aggressive styling. Certain cues on the front face are similar to that on the Fluidic Verna. The Scala has the best rear passenger space in its segment and also higher segments. It has a wheelbase which equals Corolla Altis which is of huge benefit in favor of Scala. Scala is available in petrol as well as diesel in manual and automatic transmission options priced between Rs.715411 to Rs.993537.

The Hyundai Verna fluidic has taken the game to a new level for Hyundai. Before this car, the Korean car maker came with reliable products but they did not look good. Hyundai cars always had to face criticism for the way they looked. Santro to Sonata, all the cars lacked the enthusiasm until guys at Hyundai dropped the Fluidic bomb. The Fluidic Verna ushered a new story for Hyundai in India. It is available in both petrol and diesel in manual and automatic variants priced between Rs.758515 to Rs. 1070312.

Renault Scala Vs Hyundai Verna Exteriors

The front face of the Renault Scala does away with the soft nature of the Sunny and brings in aggression to it. With the new face, the Scala has a better street presence and visual appeal. The smoke styled flowing headlamps paired with the robust nose grille design are simply fantastic.Headlights and the nose grille give slight hints of the Hyunda Fluidic Verna. Even the front bumpers have been redesigned and look a lot sportier compared to the original. Bumpers and the lines on them have been retained from the Sunny.

Side profile is very identical to the Sunny again except for some minor changes. The belt line under the windows is done in chrome and also is the door handles. The Renault Scala comes with a better set of alloys and I love the design of it. These were also seen on the Pulse hatch.

The Verna Fluidic is a very appealing car compared to its predecessor. Its radical styling looks sharp and curvy like a super model. The lines on the car are blended in to stretch from the front fender to the rear giving it a very aerodynamic look and feel. Even so, the door handles are well incorporated in the design.

Renault Scala Vs Hyundai Verna Interiors

The Interiors of the Vernaare very impressive and feel fresh and rich. The special beige and wood trim looks very modern, and the dashboard doesn’t look cheap or plasticky, but rather well sculpted.

The Verna’s leather feels smooth, and the wooden garnish on the doors adds to the elegance of the cabin. The steering wheel is sporty like the Honda City, and is comfortable especially on long drives. The new Verna’s A pillar is perfectly placed and doesn’t hinder your vision; you can clearly see on-coming cars while turning on the ghats. The cabin is well lit at night, the map lamps are spot on and don’t seem disturbing while driving. The Verna’s cabin is not the quietest of all, and the engine can initially be heard within the cabin, but it quickly settles down.

In the Scala too, the interiors have been kept very basic and utility is the main theme behind its design. Twin pod Instrument cluster has chrome outline and the numbers illustrated have been kept very simple. It displays the necessary information such as trip reading, Fuel left to empty tamp along with a digital watch as well.

A 3 spoked steering wheel has the audio controls affixed on it. This comes on both the diesel variants, which is impressive. The quality of plastics is decent and won’t let you complain about it as it does its job well.

Renault Scala Vs Hyundai Verna Performance

The Renault Scala comes in two powertrains namely the XH2 Petrol and K9K Diesel units. The petrol unit is a 1498cc engine producing a power of 99 PS at 6000 rpm and a torque of 134 Nm at 4000 rpm, while the diesel is a 1461cc engine producing a power of 86PS at 3750 rpm and a torque of 200 Nm at 2000 rpm. The Renault Scala X-Tronic is offered in petrol version only. It is offered in RXL and RXZ variants. In India, 93% of the auto market is ruled by manual transmission while a small share of 7% chooses the automatic transmission. Renault targets the 6% of that clientele who drive petrol automatic version.

The Verna comes with 4 speed auto gears which are smooth but come with a turbo lag up to 2000rpm after which the VGT (Variable Geometry Turbo) kicks in and the car accelerates instantly though a small jerk. The engine seems refined and the drive is smooth. The gearbox is tall and easy to use. The mid-range is packed with a punch and overtaking is not a problem but the 4 speed auto box does not do any justice to the sporty engine - a 5 speed would have been better and probably have taken care of the performance figures. It seems for now that the engines have been tuned to deliver good fuel efficiency without compromising much on power.

Renault Scala Vs Hyundai Verna Conclusion

It is surprising that Renault launched the CVT before its alliance partner Nissan. Though, the unit that features on the Scala is a revised version of the Nissan unit. The Renault Scala CVT is offered in petrol RXL and RXZ trims. The Scala indeed features a smooth CVT box and in many ways is even better than the versions offered in the higher segment cars. The main selling point of the Scala automatic is the fuel efficiency offered which is 17.97 kmpl beating its own manual counterpart as well as some of its competitors like the Honda City AT (15.60kmpl) and the Hyundai Verna AT (15.70kmpl).
