Mahindra’s claim to fame SUV, the Scorpio, made the Indian SUV maker a popular choice among masses. Launched in 2002, the Scorpio is a single testimony of Mahindra’s success in the SUV segment in India. It took close to five years for the Scorpio to be built from scratch and it saw active participation from suppliers. In 12 years, the Scorpio has been awarded multiple times every year. Presently, the third generation of this popular SUV is sold in India which rivals the likes of Tata Safari. Renault India, who didn’t make a happy debut finally made everyone take notice of its existence with Duster, a compact SUV which initiated a new segment after a failed attempt by Premier Rio. Launched in 2012, it was offered in multiple petrol and diesel variants. It was very well accepted and till date does not have an equivalent competition.

Exterior and Interior Design: Mahindra Scorpio Vs Renault Duster

Thanks to the third generation upgrade, the Mahindra Scorpio has got an aggressive face in league with international offerings. The sabre toothed radiator grille as seen first on the XUV500 made its way in the best avatar possible on the Scorpio. The grille gets major attention with sabre tooth styled chrome detailing. The new dual projector headlights with LED accents on top look stylish. Hidden behind are cornering lights which lights up on tight corners. Fog lamps get a smarted housing on front bumper. Underneath the wire mesh is plastic cladding with a bash plate.

Even the interiors feel very well groomed and also feel more spacious than before. There are no significant changes done to the dimensions instead the colour of plastics have got a shade lighter than before. The seats feel sufficiently cushioned with right amount of support. It would have been nice to see the seats clad in rich leather and not fabric. Nonetheless, they don’t feel inferior.

The AWD Duster gets smoked lights at front and a large chrome radiator grille. The bumper gets a matte black plastic cladding with an aluminium finished bash plate. Thanks to the smaller engine area, it gets a sizeable yet compact hood. There are enough flares on side to make it feel a proper SUV.

There are AWD stickers on the running board area and also post the rear quarter glass. It also gets darkened shade of alloy wheels which look sporty and add a contrasting touch. We are still not convinced with the door handles which are light and delicate to operate. External mirrors have a two tone finish. The B-Pillar has been covered with a black strip and the roof gets muscular roof rails where a storage ramp for cycles can be attached. The bulges on both front and rear wheels make the Duster feel muscular.

Performance: Mahindra Scorpio Vs Renault Duster

This one uses the same engine as seen on the 110PS version. The 1461cc diesel engine produces a power of 110 PS at 3900 rpm and a torque rating of 248 Nm at 2250 rpm. The Duster AWD will be only offered in 110PS version and not in the lesser powerful 85PS variant due to power limitations. It comes with a 6 speed manual transmission.

The new Gen Scorpio comes with a mHawk 4-cylinder 2179 cc VGT diesel engine which produces 120 bhp of power and 280 Nm of torque. It is the same engine which was used earlier. All variants get this engine except for the base variant which comes with an m2DICR 4-cylinder 2.5L engine making 75 bhp and 200 Nm of torque. Mahindra have sourced a new 5 speed transmission for the Scorpio from the Xylo.

Conclusion: Mahindra Scorpio Vs Renault Duster

New Mahindra Scorpio was launched at Rs. 7.98 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai). This is the base model which features the 2.5L engine. This would be ideally preferred by fleet owners and commercial operators for its durability. If you want a fully loaded version, be ready to shell out Rs. 11.46 lakhs for S10 2WD and 12.55 lakhs for S10 4WD version (ESR Mumbai).
