Mahindra & Mahindra first showcased the Thar SUV at the 2010 Indian Auto Expo. Ever since its unveiling at the show, the SUV attracted several auto enthusiasts of the country. It is also the first Mahindra to feature a diesel BS IV CRDe engine and a soft-top. The car was pitted against the country's most loved off-road vehicle - the Maruti Suzuki Gpysy - which despite being old, still, is equally popular among enthusiasts. This four-wheel drive car was launched in 1985.

Here's our comparison between these two really good off-roading capable cars.

Exterior and Interior Design - Mahindra Thar Vs Maruti Suzuki Gypsy

The Mahindra Thar largely resembles the age-old sturdy Jeep that rural buyers in the country used for many years. It offers a perfect mix of modern and retro look. It features the horizontal slat grille, round headlamps, side indicators on the wheel arches, large alloy wheels. The rectangular front glass frame is hinged on to the front. The Thar has three doors, two at the front and one at the back. The Maruti Gypsy looks simple with powerful structure that offers traditional appeal of an SUV. The boxy styling features driver's side wing mirrors, a spare wheel cover, foldable front windscreen, front footstep assembly and the old school exterior styling. The Hard Top variant of the car feature fabric upholstery and a fibre reinforced plastic top, while the Soft Top version has foldable windscreen and removable canvas top.

The cabin of the Mahindra Thar is simple and offers comfortable seats. For rear occupants, the car has longitudinally positioned seats. It has simple instrument cluster, while the dashboard sports blower/heater, retro-fit air conditioning, etc. The interior of the Maruti Suzuki Gypsy, on the other hand, is basic and comes equipped with reclining and sliding front seats. The car has fabric upholstery in the hard top version, a front package tray, a lockable glove compartment, floor carpet and steering lock.

Performance - Mahindra Thar Vs Maruti Suzuki Gypsy

The Mahindra Thar is powered by a 2.5-litre diesel engine that churns out a maximum power output of 105bhp and a peak torque of 247Nm. This engine is coupled to a five-speed gearbox which sends power to either the rear wheels or all four wheels of the car. The 4x4 variant features a Borg Warner manual shift with low reduction gear.

On the other hand, the Maruti Suzuki Gypsy is powered by a 1.3-litre petrol engine that is good for 80bhp of power. This engine is paired to a five-speed gearbox which transmits power to all four wheels of the SUV. The petrol engine ensures more power and greater responsiveness.

Mahindra Thar basically targets auto enthusiasts looking for a car that offers good performance in both on-road and off-road. On the other hand, the Suzuki Gypsy is loved by true off-roaders. The former also offers better fit, finish and refinement, while the Gypsy is a simple, no-nonsense off-roader.
