      Cartrade Comparison Test

Hyundai, the South Korean automaker, launched the all-new Santa Fe SUV in the country at the 2014 Delhi Auto Show. The latest generation model adopts Hyundai's fluidic design philosophy. The vehicle gets a complete makeover both inside and out, but the engine options remain unchanged. The Hyundai Santa Fe directly competes against the likes of Ford Endeavour, Toyota Fortuner, Chevrolet Captiva and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport.

The car that we have pitted against the new Santa Fe is the new Skoda Yeti that was re-launched in India in September 2014 with new exteriors and interiors. The Yeti's new model is available only in the top-spec Elegance trim in both front wheel and all-wheel drive layouts.

Here is our brief comparison between the two premium SUVs - the Yeti and the Sanata Fe.

      Exteriors & Interiors

The Santa Fe is Hyundai's flagship SUV in India, which received a major makeover in 2014. The new model is sculpted on the lines of 'Storm Edge' design language, which is basically a slightly modified and rugged version of Hyundai's immensely popular Hyundai's 'Fluidic' theme. Upfront is a new hexagonal grille, flanked by angular shaped large headlamps with matching fog lamps. The side profile gets aggressive creases that run along the length. The flared wheel arches of the SUV have been fitted to newly design large 17-inch alloy wheels. At the rear, the vehicle gets two-piece tail lamps, roof mounted spoiler and chrome enhancement.

On the other hand, the Skoda Yeti facelift has the company's new design philosophy. The front grille is borrowed from the new Superb, while the bumpers are now more sculpted. It is equipped with new bi-xenon headlamps with daytime running lamps, while the new bumper features wide air dam and new fog lamp assembly. At the rear, the SUV gets an aggressive bumpers and new LED tail lamps. It also has new roof rails with three different colour options - black, silver and white.

Talking about interiors, the Hyundai Santa Fe adopts the Fluidic design philosophy. The vehicle shares most of its design and components with the D-segment Elantra saloon. It features beige upholstery, blue-back lighting and black/brown panels. Premium quality switches and materials are used to give it a premium touch. As standard, the SUV gets multi-functional steering wheel with controls for audio & telephony, touchscreen infotainment system and climate control.

The interiors of the Skoda Yeti facelift largely remain the same, but there are some additional features and subtle changes. The vehicle features new three-spoke steering wheel, which is sourced from the new Octavia. As standard, the Yeti gets tyre pressure monitoring system, cruise control, electrically adjustable driver seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather wrapped steering wheel, keyless entry and start and many more features.

      Performance

The Santa Fe is propelled by a 2.2-litre diesel engine that is good for 194bhp of power and 421Nm of peak torque. It is available in both 2WD and 4WD versions. This engine is coupled to a six-speed manual gearbox, which sends power to the wheels.

On the other hand, the Skoda Yeti is powered by a 2.0-litre TDI engine that offers two states of tunes - 110PS and 140PS. While the 110PS motor is paired to a five-speed manual gearbox that transmits power to the front wheels, the all-wheel drive model sports a 140PS motor mated to a six-speed shifter.

      Conclusion

Hyundai Santa Fe is a spacious, feature loaded and powerful product, which carries a premium price tag. On the other hand, the Skoda Yeti comes with premium interiors and lots of features. Compared to Santa Fe, the Yeti lacks in power and off-road ability.
