      Hyundai’s premium offering in the hatchback scene was updated last year with the new generation Elite i20. Always a best seller, the Elite i20 is generations ahead compared to the first version launched in India. Hyundai specifically made the i20 go through the Fluidic Sculpture philosophy and the result was phenomenal. The New Hyundai i20 is based on Hyundai’s Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 and is designed in Hyundai Motor’s Design Centre Europe in Rüsselsheim The new version of Hyundai’s popular B-segment model features the brand’s ‘Fluidic Sculpture 2.0’ design philosophy, in a sophisticated and distinctive design. The Maruti Suzuki Swift, which was given a mere facelift last year, is one of the strongest selling hatchbacks in the country. There are major reasons for these two offerings to be extremely popular.

      On the front profile of Hyundai Elite i20, there is a straight cut hexagonal grille with a chrome surround. It does not gel with the overall fluidic character but it does not look a misfit in the front facia. It gets chunky large fog lamps neatly tucked beside the hexagonal radiator grille. The lower section of the front bumper has a chiselled edge.

      The front and side look impressive but one can’t stop raving about the gorgeously sleep tail lamps. It is very similar to the ones shown in the concept. These have to the best looking rear lights compared to any other hatch in India. Its three part design with a slender wing profile flowing on the rear makes it look amazing. At night, it almost looks like LEDs until one takes a closer look. The rear also gets a wider rear windshield. Rear bumpers have been revised with a two tone design. It now sports petite reflectors.

      Inside the Elite i20, it has a new instrumental panel with better scaling and a brighter blue and white display. The tilt and telescopic steering wheel gets multiple controls to control audio and Bluetooth functions. It also helps operate the information display on the central console. We just wished the display showed distance to empty and average fuel consumption in addition to the other information displayed.

      In the new Maruti Suzuki Swift, considerable importance has been given to improve utility and cosmetic interior features. New features include a sporty wrap around door trims, day and night internal rear view mirror, three spoke sporty steering wheel, silver accents in steering wheels, front door trim pockets, large volume glove box, Parcel shelf, folding assistant grip, sun visor, and ticket holder on driver side, roof lamp, inside door chrome handles etc.

      The Swift with its long stretched hood, pulled back headlamp design makes it a good looking small car. The Swift borrows certain cues from the cult classic Mini Cooper. The new generation Swift has got wider and bigger than its predecessor. The basic variants feature 165/80 R14 steel wheels which have been fitted in LXi, LDi,VXi, and VDi versions, though the basic version comes with hub center cap while the higher variant with full wheel cap. The top variant features 185/65 R15 alloy wheels, with center cap.

      The 1.4L U2 CRDi engine of the Elite i20 has been tweaked to improve power and torque delivery and bring down the vibrations. This 1396cc diesel engine produces 90Hp of power and 22.4kgm of torque between 1500 to 2750rpm. The Swift comes with a K series Petrol engine with VVT. This is a 1197cc engine which produces a power of 87PS as 6000 rpm and a torque of 114Nm at 4000 rpm. It is metted with a 5 speed manual transmission. There are many who vouch for the petrol unit’s performance and claim this is the best in its class. The 1248cc DDiS diesel engine churns out 75 PS of power at 4000 rpm and a torque of 190Nm at 2000 rpm. Maruti Suzuki does not provide an automatic transmission

      Hyundai Elite i20 will continue to be a popular choice when it comes to a modern looking hatch with a European design and multiple features. This however doesn’t affect Swift’s loyal fan base as the seekers for trust and reliability know no better company than Maruti Suzuki.
