Major automakers, today, are working on cars running on alternative fuel, and the governments too, around the world, are supporting these initiatives. Recently, the government of India too announced subsidies and incentives for green cars in India.

With the Panamera S E-Hybrid car, Porsche, the Stuttugart- Zuffenhausen based carmaker, brings a perfect blend of innovative technology and exceptional performance in electric drive. The Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid is rear-wheel-drive plug-in performance sedan. Powering the electric vehicle is a 3.0-litre, 333 horsepower, supercharged six engine, also used for many VW/ Audi cars, and an electric motor, offering a maximum power of 95hp with 229 pounds-feet of torque between 0-1700rpm.

The engine is paired with an 8-speed transmission that differentiate it from single-speed, simple and less-expensive hybrid cars. Fuel economy of the plug-in Porsche is better than most cars in this segment. Combined (gas and electric motor) power is around 416hp and 435 pounds-feet torque. It accelerates 0-60mph in 5.2 seconds. Despite having a powerful engine, it’s quite fuel efficient too. In hybrid mode, it returns a fuel economy of 23 mpg in city, 29 mpg on highways and 25 mpg combined. Unlike other plug-in hybrid cars, the Panamera S E-Hybrid can use the gas engine to recharge the battery on the go, but it consumes extra fuel for the ease.

Instead of a charge cord, Porsche provides a multi-functional Universal AC charger that works by pressing the E-Charge button. It recharges the battery pack within 40 miles – speeding up and downshifting simplifies the process. The U.S spec model, however, complied with EPA offers a range of 15 miles, and the E-Charge isn’t possible. Under default E-Power mode, the car runs as a semi-electric vehicle, and residing in this mode is quite easier than the other eco-friendly cars such as Toyota Prius PHEV.

Although, the E-Charge mode burns more fuel, and affects its fuel efficiency. The Sport Plus mode tightens the suspension and optimizes its performance. Interestingly, the battery gives full throttle and maximizes combined power, even when the battery shows zero miles range. The Panamera comes loaded with several advanced technologies such as high-tech cruise control, 360-degree camera viewing, infotainment, safety technologies, remote smart phone app and more. Porsche cars in India are a rare sight, and plug-in E-Hybrid version might take a long time to hit the India shore.
