Electric vehicles are the new buzz in the automobile industry. They are eco-friendly, more economical and efficient than the conventional engine-based vehicles. In a bid to promote electric cars in India, the government, in 2015 Union Budget, announced Rs.75 crore for electric vehicles and 6% excise duty concession on all green vehicles. Though in India, not many carmakers are focusing on electric cars, several global players have been working on advanced electric and hybrid vehicles.

General Motors, the leading American carmaker, recently unveiled crossover-style Chevrolet Bolt EV concept at the 2015 Detroit Motor Show. Moreover, the company also confirmed production of an all new fully-electric vehicle based on the Bolt EV concept. That said, the final product won’t be exactly similar to the bright orange and tall concept model. The new model will offer a range of over 200 miles.

The Bolt’s wide upright bumper, LED headlamps, a slim grill and tall proportions are inspired from the Bimmer, while the rear-end looks like the Honda Fit. The full-glass roof, wraparound rear window and glass hatch might disappear in production process. “Active aero” features and vented rear fenders are likely to stay. For saving the weight of the vehicle, GM uses a mix of lightweight aluminum, carbon fiber and magnesium. It is assembled with lightweight aluminum wheels with spokes and clear inserts. The unique wheel design not only enhances its looks, but optimizes its efficiency as well by reducing drag.

Powering the Chevy Bolt EV is an advanced lithium-ion battery that offers more than 200 miles of all-electric range. With DC (direct current) fast-charging capacity, it can be charged up to 80% in less than 45 minutes. The dual-tone interior gets a touch-sensitive dashboard, twin LED screens, a flat floor, pedestal-mounted seats and user-friendly technology. The car also gets a Bolt Connect app and an automatic park and retrieval technology.

The Bolt Connect app offers unparalleled vehicle control, while the automatic park and retrieval technology provides control on auto-valet function, wherein the car parks itself into a garage and takes back on commands. GM might introduce an Uber app, mobile based transportation software that allows ride-sharing management such as reservations, tracking and payment. The final version might retain the concept’s suspension set-up, which has functions like damping and adjustable ride height. The Bolt EV will be launched in 2017 in international markets. The long-range and economical Bolt EV is expected to perform well in developing countries like India. Chevrolet cars in India are known for their modern styling, powerful engine and drivability.
