Driving in fog is quite challenging and dangerous for motorists, as fog reduces visibility. Objects like vehicles, traffic signals or hazard lights might not be visible till the last moment and may cause serious accidents. Many of us don’t have experience of driving in extreme weather conditions such as fog. If you are not sure of your skills or feeling ill, don’t take a risk to drive. Road safety professionals suggest avoiding driving in fog, unless it’s absolutely necessary. If you must drive, check the weather forecasts and follow few car driving tips.
Concentration: A lack of concentration may lead to accident even in the standard driving conditions. Stop talking with co-passengers, turn off the radio and stay focused on the road.
Slow down: Drive slow. It will provide you enough time to take right action, while driving in fog.
Headlights: Turn-on the low-beam headlights, when the high beams don’t seem effective. It will help other drivers to see your vehicle, while the fog lamps light-up the road beneath the fog.
Tailgating: Tailgating might give you a sense of security, though most of the rear end collisions or accidents happen due to this. Follow ‘2 second rule’, and maintain a safe distance between your car and the vehicle in front. If a vehicle is following your vehicle too closely, don’t speed-up or slow down, move to another lane or road, and allow it to pass.
Dual carriageways or motorways: Speeding on dual carriageways or motorways could be exciting, as they are straight and broad. In foggy weather, when visibility is low, avoid speeding-up on these tracks.
Road Junctions: Be cautious, open window and listen for approaching vehicles while reaching or pulling out at road junctions. Due to poor visibility, you may not get an idea of oncoming traffic.
Parking: Find a safe place to park your vehicle. Keep the parking lights and sidelights on while pulling out the parking space.

Make sure that all car lights are clean and working properly, especially the fog lights.

Avoid secondary visibility reducing factors. For instance, clean all mirrors and windows both inside and outside.

Fill-up the window washer reservoir, if required. For better visibility, use windscreen wipers frequently.

Ensure that tyres are inflated at recommended pressure. In foggy weather, a vehicle often needs heavy braking. If tyres are over or under inflated, it will affect the grip and stopping power of the vehicle.

Know how to operate front and rear fog lights.

Keep the fuel tank full to ensure that you don’t run out.

Make sure that your mobile is fully charged, in case, if you need to call for help or alert someone of delay.

Carry an emergency kit or at least take a torch and extra warm clothes.
