      A number of domestic and global car makers are present in India that sell their cars with manual and automatic transmission. It was earlier considered that the automatic gearbox was only successful in sedans and luxury cars. This type of transmission also affected the fuel economy of a car and the mileage figures recorded were less than those in the manual models. However, in the present world scenario when technology governs all the aspects of an automobile, this problem has been easily eradicated. The automatic gearbox is now being incorporated in hatchbacks and is becoming largely famous among prospective buyers. Among the most famous Indian automatic cars are the following:

      1. Maruti Suzuki Celerio: Equipped with the company’s newly developed Automated Manual Transmission (AMT), this car is efficient on both performance and mileage scale. The hatchback is incorporated with a 3-cylinder 1.0-litre K-series petrol engine, which is mated to a 5-speed auto gearshift. It records a fuel economy figure of 23.1 kmpl, which is quite commendable looking at the specifications of this hatchback.

      2. Maruti Suzuki Ritz: This model of the homegrown auto major is among the best hatchback cars in India.       3. Hyundai i10: The South-Korean auto giant's hatchback, Hyundai i10 comes with an automatic gearbox in its top-end variant, called Sportz. This car features a 1.2-litre petrol engine, which delivers a power output of 79 bhp at 112 Nm peak torque and has a mileage of 17 kmpl (ARAI tested).

Maruti Suzuki A-Star: This hatchback from the Indian auto maker features a 1.0-litre K-series petrol engine, which is mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission along with the option of a 5-speed manual.       5. Honda Brio: This car was launched in India during the mid-2011 and since then it has been the premium hatchback of the Japanese car maker. The car arrives in a 1.2-litre i-VTEC petrol engine, which is mated to a 5-speed automatic gearbox with the option of a 5-speed manual. This hatchback records a fuel economy statistic of 16.5 kmpl in its automatic version, which starts at Rs. 6 lakh.

      6. Hyundai i20: This hot hatchback from the South-Korean auto maker is an efficient on-road performer. The 1.4-litre VTVT petrol engine of this car is mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission in the Sportz trim. The mill in this variant produces a power output of 99 bhp with peak torque of 137 Nm and delivers a mileage of 15 kmpl.

      7. Volkswagen Polo: The German auto major's iconic hatchback, Volkswagen Polo features a 7-speed automatic gearbox in its GT variant. The version is equipped with a 1.2-litre petrol engine and has a price tag of Rs. 8 Lakh.
