      Skyrocketing fuel prices in India is a matter of grave concern for a regular commuter. In fact, fuel efficiency is one of the primary factors that aid in decision making while purchasing a new car. The advertising campaign run by one of leading Indian car manufacturer, 'Kitna Deti hai?' - in terms of fuel efficiency, seems to address the basic fear in an Indian consumer mindset. Modern carmakers like Honda, Hyundai, Maruti Suzuki, Chevrolet and Tata seemed to have addressed to this rather-alarming situation with much satisfaction.

      In the top ten efficient car brigade, the Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 tops the chart for fuel efficient cars in India within the petrol hatchback segment. The car is powered by F8D 796 cc engine mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox, and it generates a peak power of about 48 bhp at 6000 rpm with peak torque of about 69 nm at 3500 rpm. Driving the Alto 800 is a smart and economical choice, and you can expect to extract a decent 20 kmpl. Moreover, its peppier engine lets you take a nice lead in stop-and-go traffic scenarios.

      1) Maruti Suzuki Alto 800

      Trailing closely behind is the Hyundai Eon Delight+. This car has been launched in straight line of competition with the Alto 800. This fuel efficient car is powered by 814 cc mated to a 5-speed manual gear box. It generates a peak power of about 56 bhp at 5500 rpm and peak torque of about 76 nm at 4000 rpm. Interested buyers can expect fuel efficiency of around 18 kmpl depending on driving conditions.

      2) Hyundai Eon Delight+

      Yet to be launched, Maruti Celerio is powered by a 1.0 litre, 3 cylinder K-series petrol engine that churns out amazing power output of 67 bhp at 90 Nm max torque. The car boasts of new automated manual transmission technology and is reported to be 5 percent more efficient than a regular manual version car.

      3) Maruti Suzuki Celeri

      Fresh off the handle from the Honda cars assembly line, Honda City in recent times has been in the news with its new diesel variant launch. The car features a 1.5 litre –DTECH engine that powers the car with an output of 100 PS at 3600 rpm and 200 Nm of Torque at 1750 rpm. The car is mated with a 6-speed manual transmission engine. As per ARAI certification, the Honda City delivers an impressive mileage of around 26 kmpl. The car is available in five manual transmission diesel variants like E, S, SV, V and VX. You can expect a decent 14 -16 kmpl from its petrol counterpart.

      Chevrolet Beat has been in the Indian market for a while and has been competing against Hyundai's tall boy Santro. The car is powered by 936cc engine that produces a maximum torque of 150 Nm and delivers 18.5 kmpl in petrol and 25.4 kmpl in diesel.

      Honda Brio's competitor, Hyundai i10 is powered by 1.2 L Kappa2 petrol engine that delivers 20.36 kmpl as per Automotive Research Association of India. A refined engine and ample cabin space worked wonders for this car.

      Ford Ecosport is currently a bestseller amongst Ford cars. The city SUV is powered with a 1.5 litre TDCi engine and delivers an impressive 18 kmpl. The car really kicked off well since its inception a year ago.
