      Diesel cars witnessed a fair favour in India, with every manufacturer bringing in its line-up with the oil-burner powerplant. The strong demand didn’t subdue even for the fact of shedding out extra money for the diesel variant, since the perception of difference being compensated with the fuel costs. Here are listed few of the top oil burners on sale in India and includes a variety of cars from small hatchback to sedans and hunky SUVS:

      Maruti Suzuki Dzire: Maruti Suzuki is the highest selling sedan for the manufacturer in India. With the most tried and tested 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine it makes 75bhp of power and 190Nm of torque. The compact sedan delivers a commendable mileage as well. The Dzire is consistently selling more than 15,000 units every month and is priced between Rs 6.16 -8.58 lakh.

      Tata Tiago: The Tiago is a runaway success for Tata as it continues to grab attention of Indian car buyers. The 1.05-litre Revotorq diesel engine powering the Tiago is good for 70bhp of power and 140Nm of torque with a claimed ARAI economy of 27.28kmpl. Prices are kept competitive by the Indian carmaker ranging between Rs 3.95 – 5.71 lakh.

      Volkswagen Ameo: The Ameo diesel is powered by a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder TDI engine making 109bhp and 250Nm. It gets a five-speed manual and the first-in-segment seven-speed DSG transmission. The German manufacturer claims an ARAI fuel efficiency of 21.73kmpl for the Ameo sedan. Prices start at Rs 6.34 lakh and go up to Rs 9.32 lakh.

      Honda City: Honda launched the City diesel in its fourth-generation in 2014. It uses the 1.5-litre i-DTEC engine which makes 99bhp and 200Nm of torque. With a fuel efficiency of 26kmpl, Honda claims that the new City has the highest ARAI efficiency numbers in the segment. Prices for the new City range between at Rs 9.44 - 12.55 lakh

      Renault Duster: The Duster initiated a new segment of crossover SUVs in India. Powered by a 1.5-litre diesel unit in two states of tune – 84bhp with 200Nm and 108bhp with 240Nm, the new Duster also gets the automated-manual six-speed gearbox that is available with the 108bhp variant. Prices range between Rs 9.34 - 13.78 lakh.

      Hyundai Creta: Hyundai’s take on the crossover SUV in India, the Creta has an attractive design and feature-rich interiors; and two diesel engine options. The same 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre four cylinder units, the former makes 89bhp and 220Nm of torque, whereas the latter puts out 126bhp and 260Nm. Prices lie between Rs 10.05 – 14.85 lakh.

      Mahindra XUV500: With first-in-class features and equipment, the XUV is a stylish SUV. Power comes from a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine, delivering 140bhp and 330Nm of torque through a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. Or a 2.0-litre diesel engine, making 140bhp and 320Nm. It also has an optional all-wheel-drive system. Price for the XUV500 ranges between Rs 12.09 - 18.03 lakh.

      Toyota Innova Crysta: The Innova Crysta gets an updated 2.4-litre diesel unit producing 147bhp and 343Nm of torque mated to a five-speed manual gearbox or an option of a six-speed automatic as well, but it is only available with the new 2.8-litre four cylinder turbo-charged diesel generating 174bhp of power and 360Nm of torque. Price ranges around Rs 13.96 – 20.93 lakh.

      Ford Endeavour: The new Ford Endeavour retains its muscular stance and the imposing road presence with off-road credentials. Engine option includes – 2.2-litre or a 3.2-litre diesel units; with 158bhp and 385Nm or 197bhp and 470Nm respectively. Both engines come with a six-speed automatic transmission, but the later also gets a six-speed manual. Price ranges between Rs 23.78 and 29.77 lakh.

      Audi Q7: The new Q7 is bigger and better. Powered by a 3.0-litre TDI engine producing 272bhp and 600Nm of torque, it is offered with an eight-speed automatic gearbox that powers Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system. The diesel powerplant of the Q7 is one of the most efficient units in the India. The Q7 is priced at Rs 72.9 and 80.95 lakh.
