Cars Q&A

I had bought a used Scorpio from the dealer. The transfer of ownership is in process. Almost 3 weeks are over but yet the RC book is not came. So normally how long does it take for transfer of ownership. Insurance is valid till Nov 2010 and i would like to transfer it in my name.So please suggest me that what is the procedure for it. Or is it fine , if i keep the insurance in the seller name till next renewal? But in this case, if i need to claim for anything then what is require from seller end. Regards, Pankaj R. Panchal

  • Expert Hi,
Generally the process of change of ownership can be done within 15 days.As it has already taken more than 3 weeks, it needs to be folowed up.It will always be bette to keep insurance in your name as for claiming its essential to take signature of the actual owner as mentioned in insurance policy.

  • hello,
check with RTO for any other formality, normally it takes one month.Keeping the insurance in previous owner's name will be of no use since the insurance and registration should be same name.once the registration is changed previous policy is useless.contact nearest insurance co.whose rep.will visit and shall inspect the car for rs.175/- and will give u the copy of inspection report and by producing the same with the ins.co.within 24 hrs.you can get your policy.make sure there is not damage or scratches on the car part which shall not be covered for the whole year
    regards

  • hi mr . Raju Singh ,
why 1 month for transfering of ownership .

  • Insurance and RC book owner should be same. If you transfer the vehicle in your name and have receipt of RTO, pending final transfer; you can ask the same insurance company to transfer the title in your name. The company will collect unused amount of No Claim Bonus on pro rata basis, if any + the transfer charges. In case you have transferred the vehicle and not the insurance (which could be done with 14 days of date of transfer) the claim will not be settled. Because at the time of claim, you have the vehicle registered in your name but no Insurance and the previous owner has the Insurance but no vehicle.
