Cars Q&A

Question
I am planning to buy a car in hatchback segment with a budget of 3 lakhs. 3 cars fit in that range Maruti Alto, Tata Indica Xeta and Santro Xing XK (non AC). I am inclined towards Xeta (for engine power) but apprehensive, as I've heard that its balance and control are not that good. Kindly suggest

Tata Xeta is value for money. It is having good space & cheap but engine is not that defined. More vibration even in petrol engine also.Alto & Santro is having good silent engine with less vibration & more fuel efficient but with less space & costly. Just take test drive of all & decide.

Hi,
Indica Xeta will be a good option on account of spacious interiors, reliable engine and good build quality thanw ith Alto and Santro Xing. Though mileage will be lesser by one or two KMPL it is value for the money invested.

hi,

as per my opinion about yr question. see, because of heavy engine of 1400cc power and heavy body. how could u face the prob. of balancing. as far as me concern i have xeta glg. and i am driving it from last one year. i am the second owner of my car. its approx 4 year old car. but its excellent in all way. except a little average. only 1 or 2 k.m per ltr. less then sentro or alto in a city. and i love badly to my black babby.(Indica GLG)

If you are looking for diesel option, then go for Tata, else for petrol, you have lot of choice from Maruti/Hyundai/GM. Would advice to wait for Alto as Maruti bringing up modified Alto with better engine - you can look into GM's Spark as well.

I am owning Xeta GLS since April 2009. It has a really good AC, power steering, huge space for 5 (driver+4) passengers and powerful 1.2L engine. No other cars with similar price tag are having these features all together. I am getting average of 15-17 kmpl in city/ highways with/ without AC. I think it is not too less as compared to Alto/ santro/ spark or any other car having price tag of 3- 3.5 lakh.

If you are taking car with long term perspective , utility , space Indica is really good. Alto or Santro will look like toys beside Indica. Indica has a really big car feel & very stable on high speeds too ( 120 - 130 Km/Hr.)
Being heavy car it is very safe on highways.
Pro Indica -
Big Car , Spacious , sturdy , low maintanance , stable at high speeds , Cheap.
Cons Indica :-
Slightly lower fuel efficiency , Low resale value.

Indica body frame is toughest among your short list. Except for the fact of low fuel economy, the Xeta has no problems. Its for those who really need a heavy car with good driving pleasure, unlike other light weight cars where the feeling of flying starts at speeds above 75kmph. People in our country run towards fuel economy but thats not the only factor. Other plus point of Indica Xeta is it has a notchy gear lever so that there is no searching for gear slots. TATA has largely improved their passenger cars in the last 3-4 years dedicating interest in R&D. I have Indica petrol LSI V2 (2002 model) and an Indica Xeta (2010 model) except the older engine runs a little coarse, its very reliable.
