Cars Q&A

Question
Sir, I have an Opel Astra 1.7TD 2001 model. It exhausts thick black smoke when I drive in 3rd and 2nd gear. A mechanic told me to change the egr valve. Fuel pump side is okay as per the mechanic. kindly suggest a remedy. There is no problem in the pick-up as I drove easily around 120 kmph

On the face of it, it looks like the diesel pump may be out of tune. Opel Astras do smoke a bit, especially as they get old. You have not mentioned how many kilometers the car has clocked, which is an important piece of information to gauge where the problem may be. Do let me know that...

Hi,
The problem could be due to diesel pump or EGR valve. As the pump is ok the problem could be solved by replacing EGR valver or else the head needs to be decarbonised.

Hi ,

Also check the lube level , Is your car requiring lube top ups at around 1000 kms . When idling pls raise the rpm to 3000 rpm and check , if smoke is there then engine needs major work ie big bill
