Cars Q&A

I m planning to buy a hatchback in the budget of 4 lac. My concern is on Wagon r Vxi or Santro Xing GLS as I want to have a samll width car due to lack of parking space. But I heard that both the cars are several years old and may soon get phased out. Features wise I think wagon-r is good as it comes with key less entry, key-reminder, door ajar warning lamp, boot lamp addtional to santro gls. Also suggest me which is better a Maruti productor a Hyundai product overall. Thanks

Dear Vipul, It is highly likely that santro will be replaced as it is dated. Wagon R, though launched much later than santro is also quite out of depth in the market place. If you consider the cars in the less than 4lcas range, the best bet is the FIAT Palio. Cars like Palio are much more versatile, designs are more classic and last longer and much better in every key aspect SPACE, SAFETY, STABILITY, RIDE and HANDLING. I have owned a Palio since 2003 and still drive it to work even though I have other bigger cars. You will get 2km less mileage compared to a Wagon R, but its worth every bit of it. And if you want low running costs, go for the FIAT PALIO Multijet diesel, its the best small capacity engine in the world today.

Hi Vipul-I have owned a wagon R for the last 6.5 years, so can give you a review of the same. Positives - Good engine (no problems till date - hv done 76000+ kms), AC gives good cooling, stable, high seating position gives great stability, wide and easy to load boot, ample storage spaces for varied items inside, stable at speeds upto 110 KMPH (good highway cruiser), great for kids who prefer to move around in the vehicle when on the move, good braking stability, good pick up, low on maintenance, city average - 13 with AC on, 15.5 with AC off, Highway - 18 with AC off, 16 with AC on. Negatives - rear seat has a bit of limited width (3 adults side to side is a bit of a squeeze), gearshift is not as precise as a santro xing (I have drive one so i know). Overally, the Wagon R is a great vehicle to own. I now own a swift dzire vxi also, but the enjoyment of driving the wagon R still remains.

There's no doubt that the Wagon R is dependable and easy to maintain car. However, it is outdated.Go for one of the many newer options in the market.

Dear Mr Gupta,

Absolutely, WagonR........Maruti has the best after sales service, you can find a maruti Service station anywhere in India, moreover the resale value is also better than Santro. You can get a used Santro for 1.5Lacs but Wagonr above 2Lacs.

This shows you the difference.
