Cars Q&A

Question
I have an opel corsa 1.4GLS which is giving some problems related to pickup and acceleration. Mechanics say that it could be due to faulty ignition coil. Please advise whether it is ok to buy this part from the open market and not from the authorized service center as it is too expensive there.

Hi,
There is no relation between pickup and ignition system.
The fault can be in fuel supply system it may arise due to carbonisation. Please get it checked with other mechanic.

Answer by Shiva Shankar 07 July 2009

Hi Dr Rao, I think the point of asking such questions here is that one can be better informed when approaching mechanics.

As we know that mechanics may often indicate problems which are not there - and here on this site we can get honest advice.

Answer by Ashwin 07 July 2009

even my car faced a loss of pick up and the fault was a faulty ignition coil diagnosed by a maruti authorised dealer,i suggest u get it changed at an auth. dealer only as these guys give a warranty.the ignition coil for my baleno cost about 2000 rupees which i feel is not too expensive although i don't know about opel parts.

Answer by Rohit 07 July 2009

hello
i would suggest you to try changing the spark plugs on the first phase and when you change by the twin spark plug as it is really great i have it on my vehicle opel corsa, and if the problem presists then u will have to change the ignition coil as i had changed it 1 1/2 years back from the market only and its working fine till date

Answer by Yousuf 07 July 2009

as rightly mentioned by shiva our expert , there is no relation between pick up & the ign coil. with a faulty ignition / spark , the car will give a characteristic jerking & something like a lag during acceleration. check for the air system & fuel system.

Sitting in front of the computer, and giving a suggestion,is not that good ,for such problems.
There are so many reasons and it is better to rely on the Dealer for such problems as he has the expertise and the parts with warranty.Just do not ask experts like us who cannot be experts in every field.Even though I am an AUto mobile engineer with 40yrs experience I cannot answer your questions correctly. I may give some clue, but it may work or not.Hence please desist in asking such questions.

Answer by S Joshi 07 July 2009

Many thanks to all of you for your inputs. I have already got the spark plugs checked, fuel injectors cleaned and the fuel line checked. There seems to be no problem with that which led the mechanic to the conclusion of faulty ignition coil. Unfortunately opel corsa ignition coil at the authorized dealer is approximately Rs. 16,000 and that is the reason I am seeking advice on whether it is ok to buy it from the market.

And yes, the problem is of jerking and lag in acceleration as well.

Answer by Mudit Agarwal 07 July 2009

Ignition coil for corsa is available in kashmiri gate market delhi for about Rs.1500/-. I got one changed about a year back as there was jerking/uncontrolled acceleration .It is working fine since.

Answer by Shailender Mongia 07 July 2009

my car is undergoing a similar problem where in it tends to stop while running, it comes to an abrupt halt and does not start for a while. No matter how much i try to start it does not even jerk. If it does tend to start, no matter how much i press the accelerator, it does not stay on, after coughing a little it dies back. After consulting a GM authorized dealer service station i was recommended to get the ignition coil changed, which he checked just before he went for the test drive of my car. the ignition coil was cated a@ 17,000/-. Do you think its worth it????

Answer by Ajay Gutta 06 June 2010

I got my coil. a Magnetti Marelli piece from Chawla Auto at Khan Market. Seems to be going fine for over an year. I think its being made here for the GM cars and cost around 1800

Answer by Aseem 07 July 2010

I have been called up by the opel service center. they tell me that the ignition coil needs to be changed and its cost is Rs. 17,000/=. I know that the original part will not cost more than a couple of thousand rupees. We need to have some regulation on the auto dealers and the auto companies engaging in such practices. they finally say that they will not be responsible for the malfunctioning of the car nor they will change the ignition coil if you bring it from the mrket to them

Answer by Gaurav Shinghal 07 July 2010

When I faced the same problem about 6 months back, I used a local DIS (Distributed Ignition System... I guess), costing around Rs.2,000. The jerking came back again after a couple of months. Even after the mechanic again changed it (additional cost of Rs 2,000), the problem persisted. After the Ignition coil wires (local make - Rs 800), which connects the DIS to the spark plug was changed, the jerking was eliminated. I ended up buying 1 more DIS, when the problem was actually in the connecting wires. So my advice would be to have the wires also checked before replacing the ignition coil.

Answer by Yogesh A 12 December 2011

An opel s an Opel dont take it to road side mechanic you will spend the rest of your time with him.BTW you can get a badly used scrap Opel at Hyderabad for Rs 20K so decide you want coil or you want old car.

Answer by Venkateshwaran 12 December 2011

The problem is due to duplicate/defective Ignition coil or Spark Plug or Original Company made Spark plug cable. Check all these. The Original Ignition Coil price with the company is Rs.18,000/- . Try the original parts with Kabadi, its a best bargain. Purchase it after test.
