Withthe actual test drive, Punto petrol version gives mileage of 11 to 14 KMPL and that of diesel gives 14 to 17.5 KMPL.The advatage of Punto are good ride and handling, good safety featurea and good styling.Overall Punto will be a worthy selection.
Not sure where you got 7/8 km per liter news, even the old Palio 1.6 gave more than that . This engine should give more and easily 12 km/liter in city and 15/16 in highway y and also depends on driving habits. Test drive the care its really cool.

Is your question wrong?
Hope you are not comparing the punto 1.2 petrol to Swift 1.3 petrol. The only engine which is common to both of them is the 1.3 L QJD diesel.
The 1.2L Petrol of Punto is shared by Tata Vista 1.2 SAFIRE which is a historical engine(8V SOHC) and the Punto IS a heavy car. the 1.4 L (16V DOHC)is the way to go if you want to stick to petrol but then again, the performance of 1.4L is not too much different from 1.2L in city.
For complete no fuss product you may consider Hyundai i20 or Maruti Ritz as an alternate!
Punto is using 1.2Lt engine while Maruti Swift has 1.3Lt.
The fuel efficiency of Punto engine is higher than swift It will be in order to opt for Fiat Punto.
