Cars Q&A

Question
I have a 1999 model Zen lx. Its usage is within 25 km radius. I wish to change into gas from petrol. Is it advisable. If so which is the best unit?

Frankly speaking, why would you need to convert your car to lpg/ cng? the usage is just 25 kms, daily as specified by you. your car model is quite old as well. you may not be able to even break even , if you fit in the Gas Kit.

Would advise you not to convert your car to gas if your usage is not likely to increase.

Hi,
The fuel economy will be better than that petrol. But the comfort level will not be as good as Petrol version as it needs more frequent repairs than with petrol.

As such cng is better than lpg diesel & petrol but why do you want to fit gas kit in such a old version? You want get advantage in old vehicle with only 25 km/day. If possible buy new vehicle of your choice & fit cng kit.
I have used santro lpg. Now I am using Honda citi cng & Indica xeta cng. In my view in any vehicle lpg is better than diesel but cng is better than lpg petrol & diesel. My honda runs 1 rs./km with ac on highway & Xeta at 1.35 rs/km with ac on highway. Cng cost 27.50 /kg in surat. In cng pickup is less but they fit advance timer circuit which gives pickup like petrol so go for cng if it is available.

Dear Friend,

Good Day!

Why do you want to go for CNG, if your driving radius is just 25km/per day and you can easily attain 18-20KMPL if you drive according to norms. Don't even think for converting your awesome zen engine. One of Maruti's best ever engine is fitted in Zen, so instead of spending 30-40k, save that money for re-fueling your car.

Your daily running does not justify fitting lpg kit. Your payback period will be high. With lpg you will not enjoy the drive due to low pickup. Since this is old model, it is a carburettor verson, the gas kit also has mechanical option. Hence not recommended to go for lpg kit.

Answer by Kiran Keskar 06 June 2009

As per my suggession don't go for LPG conversion since your running is less. The cosyt of good imported kit is around Rs 22000 plus fixing charges. The breakeven point will take long time may be three to four years considering the fuel cost difference only. The maintenance cost with LPG increases

As per the requirements you do ont have much of a run daily .. So the cost of recovery of the LPG or CNG kit will not be recovered soon .. so my advice is to stay at petrol bcoz the cost is not much of daily use ..

FRIEND,

IF YOU ARE A PERSON, DRIVING YOUR CAR REGULARLY AROUND 35 KILOMETERS A DAY OR ABOVE 1500 KMS IN EVERY MONTH, IT IS ADVISABLE TO CONVERT THE FUEL KIT ASSEMBLY. MAKE SURE THAT DON'T USE WITH LPG IN FULL TIME , TRY TO USE PETROL FREQUENTLY, THE MILAGE WILL BE NOT MUCH BETTER IN CITIES FROM LPG. IT IS ADVISABLE LPG FOR LONG RUN. AND DON'T TRY TO GET MORE MILAGE BY TUNING THE LPG KIT THAT MUCH BECAUSE THIS WILL REDUSE THE SUPPLY OF THE FUEL TO THE ENGINE, THIS WILL STRAIN UR ENGINE..

your 1999 model zen,im sure has seen better days.no matter how well you may have maintained it in the past 10 years, i'm sure the car has already lost a bit of its power as compared to how peppy it was when it was new.installing and running it on lpg/cng will surely only have negative effects on it's performance.it also means permanently lugging around something that looks like failed submarine experiment from the cold war era!!
in my opinion i would advise you to spend the money you plan to invest in the lpg/cng kit on good repair and restoration job instead (both mechanically and cosmetically)on your long standing friend(zen)

hi friend, there is nothing to worry to fit lpg kit in your zen or like this.cost is too low like rs.2600/- including all.your mileage will better regarding cost. no chance of damaging your car parts or engeen.only thing the pickup will b a little less than petrol. and airfilter is need to clean in regular interval. so hurry buddy.nothing to worry.
