It is better to purchase nano. As used vehicle will give problem in 1-2 yrs & at that time maintainance cost will b high & it is difficult to sell also as bcoz of nano & other small vehicle price of 2nd hand vehicle will b very low.

Hi,
Nano will be a good choice if already booked and sure of getting in first or second phase. Otherwise Santro will be a good option as it can be bought for around 1.5lac .

Answer by Shiva Shankar 04 April 2009

if used Alto. if new Nano . Any used Maruti is better than other used ones. I live in Himachal trust me.

Answer by Munish 04 April 2009

Nano will be a good option but please note that maruti alto is always promising vehicle than any one else. Nano is still to come on road and it is a history of tata vehicle that it always fails on road e.g. tata indica, many of my friends are having this vehicle and they have heavy maintenance cost. I have Purchased maruti alto used car in 2007 of model 2003 except battery i have not spend anything on my car.

Answer by Naresh Trivedi 04 April 2009

I am using Alto since last year, it is very smart/economic/low maintenance car in its class, & if you trust me, it is anytime better than a NANO.

Mr.Shiva sir, Dr.Ketan,Mr.Munish,Mr.Naresh And Mr.N D Pagaey Thanks for advised but my height is 6fit so I think alto is not good option so I planed santro! plz guide me!

Answer by Sunil 04 April 2009

Dear Sunil,
If your budget permits, go for a later version of the Santro, best would be around 2005 or 2006. The other option for a tall person is the Wagon R. I had a Wagon R (and I am also 6ft tall) and I never had a problem with the car or anything else.
The Nano will not give you the driving pleasure that one will expect on a long drive. You may enjoy it in the city on a usual day, but you will curse it on the highway on that day that you decide to go out. Especially when you have an open road in front of you, Maruti 800s whizzing past and you feel you are standing still at 70kmph!!
No Nano; its for people who don't know what driving is all about!

Hi Sasi Menon Thanks for advised!

Answer by Sunil 04 April 2009

Dear Mr. Sasi Menon,

It seems that you are dead against Nano, as I could find you are writing against it everytime. Just explain me the following:-
Maruti 800s whizzing past and you feel you are standing still at 70kmph!!

It seems that TATA has presented you with the First Nano and you have drove it on the Highways. Why are you making people mad against Nano? Any particular reason?

Whenever you write against Nano why dont you come up and give a free car to everyone so that everyone is satisfied and does not go for NANO.

How fast a car can zoom past depends on the driving technique. Even old Fiat can beat Maruti 800 on Highways, but that does not mean old Fiat is superior to Maruti 800 in everyways.

Another thing Maruti 800 comes with a basic price tag much higher than the costliest model of Nano. Petrol consumption is also a concern.

So please think and write once you are commenting and suggesting people to go for an option. Please do not misguide them.

Answer by NuttyRacer 04 April 2009

Sunil - I think given your requirements, a Santro or Wagon R are both good options. The Wagon R is widely considered to have the best engine in the Maruti stable, so my ppick would be that. A Nano would be good for city driving, but not sure it will give you a comfortable 500Km drive.

Answer by Nitin Sehgal 04 April 2009

Dear Commenter

I request you not give wrong advice to Questioners please.

NANO is having small 682 CC petrol engine , Maruti had made same car in 1980's of 800cc called Maruti 800 and it was just for city not on Highways.
For your information Nano is not for highways.

Now a days more powerful trucks of AWM, Volvo, Tata etc will give pressure thrust to nano while passing so that very easily nano will scrummble on road.
There is no safty while on higways, because I have taken a test drive of same and have learn a lot about nano.

Nano is just 600 CC scoter for 4person in city with shelter tats all.

So better to go for Santro or new model Alto from Maruti, but never for Nano.
and Finally 600 cc car for Indian higways is not tested and engine of nano coz it's tata who failed in petrol engine will never run nano for long time.

only feature of nano is less price, but No Safty and High Maintenance (Engineering and Design by Indian).

If used cars are from authorized company's show room then absolutely no Probs

So best of luck.

I find that many answers are seemingly correct.
Nano is a city car predominantly but you have to wait and watch for two years.
I know I scoffed at Maruti 800 initally, but it proved I am wrong.
It is the best car for city drive and resonably long distance but for suspension and not that very comfortable for continous running on Highways.
It has won the Australian Rally for long distance as per Guiness Records.
It will be better if Maruti fixes their 600cc engine from Japan, which was available, some years back and improve the suspension like Alto and seats comfortableness, and price it below Nano of 1.3 Lakhs,it will be the best,as the spareparts and mechanics are easily available as compared to Nano, which will be very costly initally but it may come down due to indigenousation, and easy availabilty.
Maruti is the best choice for me and you can get good one for a Lakh of rupees, and run the same.

Answer by P C Rao 04 April 2009

Dear All,
I am a long distance driver and usually do about 800 to 900km a day on a good 4 lane highway. The average for a normal long distance driver is about 500-600km a day, done easily. When I speak of the Nano, I look at it from this point of view. That is why I have mentioned very early that the Nano is a good car for the city, with a small footprint, easy parking and economy. It is a good car for someone who is either upgrading from a two wheeler or buying a second car for daily errands.
But, to stress the point again... that is not what driving is all about! If you want to do 500km plus drives, you need something that can overtake easily on the highway, does not shake and stir when a truck goes past and is able to tackle a pothole at 80kmph without flying off the road. And, I regret to say, the Nano doesn't fit this bill.
So, please don't misunderstand me; I am NOT AGAINST the Nano, I am FOR the PLEASURE of driving and the freedom that it brings!
Cheers!
Sasi
PS: Doesn't anyone remember the days when you took the Maruti Omni out on the highway and felt that someone bumped into you from the side at 60kmph, when a truck passed by? Scary thought, isn't it?
