Buying a 1995 Esteem in 2011 is not agood idea at all. Firstly as you have mentioned lot of work needs to be done on the car one more thing you have to consider is that the RTO generally registers the car for a period of 15 Yrs. which means that you will have to get the car re certified from the concerned RTO for another 5 yrs or so, so add that cost as well.

buying a three generation old esteem @70k would be foolish instead go for type 2 esteem the mpfi model by increasing ur budget by 30%.at least you will be able to run the car on regular basis otherwise your day will start by calling the mechanic.

u r planning to buy set of losses in the name of said esteem
1.intial cost is very high ie 40000 instead of 22000.
2.cost of repair is very high as u told 20,000 instead of 40000.
3.milage of esteem is very low as compared to m800 ie 12 km/ltr
4.spare part r costly.
5.hard to drive in city also for parking.
6.no resale value.
7.u have to pay RTO tax for Repassing.
8.u will not get original joy of driving.
