We had a 2000 model Maruti 800 (5 gear MPFI) model. It had a similar engine to the Alto. We had covered more that 1,25,000 km in the same and had no problems with the car. The car always used to return a average of 17-18km/ltr in city. Now we have exchanged the car in favour of ALTO LXI, and done 3000 km. The average of the car in ranging from 9 to 11km/ltr with the same driving skills in Delhi.You may gauge our skills by the fact the M800 after covering 1.25lac km had still been running on original clutch plate and without requiring engine overhaul. So I guess I am driving the car well. I have reported this to two Maruti workshops, but they have not been able to do anything about this. All they say is that the average would improve after 3rd service, which I feel is only a old wives tale. There is no other problem in the car like starting problem or stalling of engine. The pick up though feels less than adequate.
